Super Heroes…

What makes a teacher great?

When they give a damn.

  1. I had a teacher who gave a damn once. She kept me back at the end of English class and she asked me if I was ok. Some of my writing of late had been suspect and she cared enough about me as her student to hold me back and ask the uncomfortable questions. Was this my conservative private school’s English teacher? No, it was my worn and abused, Atheist public school English teacher. I told her I was fine but she knew it was a lie. She’d seen my heart bleeding out all over the paper. She told me her availability in case I needed someone to talk to then gave me her number.
Thats action. Thats Christlike. Thats empathy.

One of my most traumatic moments at the private school was when the headmaster pointed at me with his stick and had me come and stand in front of my whole class including the boy I had been crazy about since second grade. I was a shy, unhappy, insecure fifteen. The Headmaster pointed to all the things on my person (including how I was wearing my hair) that he didn’t like; that he didn’t think belonged at that school. I was visibly unhappy. If any of those teachers give a damn, they didn’t give a damn about me.

My sister is a teacher and I know that she loves every one of her students and prays for them and their families, but she’s a special kind of hero. She watches them vigilantly for signs of trouble; signs of heartache; she watches them for signs of abuse and drugs.

She cares infinitely, and the teachers who give a damn….THEY CHANGE THE WORLD one deeply troubled, suicidal teen at a time.

Thank you to all the teachers reading this that have fought for the lost causes.
